Where are my recordings stored?
On your iPhone, encrypted. Your recordings are never uploaded to us — Voxhops has no account, and your recordings never touch any server (the only thing we ever receive is feedback you choose to send). Your recordings are included in your own iPhone backup (so you can restore them on a new phone with your passphrase); that backup is yours and Apple's, not ours. See our Privacy Policy.
Does Voxhops upload my interviews to the cloud?
No — not to us. Recording, transcription, and speaker labeling all happen on your device. The app reaches the internet only in three cases: if you choose to download the optional high-accuracy model (from Hugging Face); if you send the in-app Feedback form (your message plus your app version and device type — and your email only if you add it); and — if you turn on location-in-titles (off by default) — when a coarse coordinate is sent to Apple to look up a place name. None of these sends your recordings or transcripts anywhere. (Separately, your encrypted recordings can be part of your own iCloud/device backup, which you control in iOS Settings.)
Is Voxhops free?
Yes. Voxhops is free, with every feature unlocked — no subscription, no in-app purchase, and no account.
I reinstalled, or moved to a new phone. How do I get my recordings back?
Your recordings come back from your iPhone backup: restore the device (or its data) from your backup and enter your passphrase. Recordings live in your own backup, never on a Voxhops server, so a backup is how they travel between devices.
How do I download the high-accuracy transcription model?
Settings → download the high-accuracy model (about 1.5 GB, over Wi-Fi). It's optional — the standard model ships in the app and handles clean recordings well; the larger model helps with noisy or field audio. You start the download yourself; it is never automatic.
How do I turn on the Face ID lock or the place-name-in-title feature?
Both are in Settings. The Face ID app lock and location-based titling are off by default; turn either on whenever you want.
How accurate is the transcription, and what about two speakers?
Transcription runs on-device and is good on clean audio, with a high-accuracy model available for harder recordings. Speaker labels are a starting point you can rename and correct — you're always the editor.
How do I export or delete a recording?
Use the share button in an interview to export a Markdown transcript (flagged quotes plus a speaker-attributed, timestamped transcript). To delete, remove the interview in the app; to remove everything on the device, delete the app (a copy may remain in your backup until it updates — see the storage question above).
Is it legal to record someone?
That depends on where you are. U.S. federal law generally allows one-party consent, but about a dozen states — and many countries — require everyone's consent, and phone and in-person rules can differ. You are responsible for getting any required consent and following the recording laws that apply to you; this isn't legal advice. See the responsibility note in our Privacy Policy.
Transcription didn't run or looks wrong.
Make sure the recording finished and the app had a moment to process it. For noisy or field audio, download the high-accuracy model (Settings) and re-run that interview (long-press → Retranscribe).
The model download failed.
Check you're on Wi-Fi with room to spare (about 1.5 GB), then try again from Settings.
The microphone isn't working.
Confirm Voxhops has microphone permission in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone.
